John Hepburn was an important person in Scotland a long time ago. He was a church leader called a prior at Saint Andrews. He helped start a college and even rebuilt parts of a town's walls!

Who Was John Hepburn?

John Hepburn was the son of Patrick Hepburn, 1st Lord of Hailes. His father was a powerful noble. John became a prior, which is a leader in a monastery or a church. He was in charge of the Saint Andrews priory.

He also helped teach Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell. This younger Patrick later took over John's role as prior in 1522. John Hepburn died sometime after July 20, 1525.

Building a College

John Hepburn cared a lot about education. In 1512, he started a new college. It was called Saint Leonard's College. This college was part of the famous University of St Andrews. It helped many students learn and grow.

Helping the Town

Around 1520, John Hepburn used his own money to help the town of Saint Andrews. He paid for the town walls to be rebuilt. These walls helped protect the town and its people. This shows he was a leader who cared about his community.

A Big Job He Didn't Get

John Hepburn was very respected. He was chosen to be the Archbishop of St Andrews. This was a very high position in the church. However, the Pope decided not to approve his appointment. So, John Hepburn did not become the Archbishop.
