John Wilson Higgins (born January 27, 1930 – died June 28, 2017) was a Scottish professional footballer. He was a strong defender who played for several clubs. These included Hibernian and St Mirren. John was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
Playing Career
John Higgins started his football journey with the Edinburgh club Hibernian. He was part of the Hibs team that played in the 1955–56 European Cup. This was a very special event. Hibernian was the first British club ever to join a European football competition!
After his time at Hibernian, Higgins moved to St Mirren. He played for them for two seasons, from 1957 to 1959. During this time, St Mirren won the 1958–59 Scottish Cup. John was a member of this winning squad. However, he could not play in the final match because he was unwell.
Later, Higgins played for Swindon Town. He joined this club in the Football League and played there from 1959 to 1961.
Later Life and Passing
John Higgins passed away on June 28, 2017. He was 87 years old. He died in a nursing home in Edinburgh. John had been living with Alzheimer's disease.
