John Hollings (sometimes spelled Hollins) was an important English doctor who lived from about 1683 to 1739. He became a very respected physician and even worked for the King of England!

Early Life and Education

John Hollings was born around 1683. His father, also named John Hollings, was a doctor from Shrewsbury. Young John went to Shrewsbury School when he was a boy.

After school, he went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1700. Soon after, he moved to Magdalene College, Cambridge. He studied hard and earned his first medical degree, a Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.), in 1705. Five years later, in 1710, he earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.

A Respected Physician

John Hollings quickly became a well-known doctor. In 1725, he was accepted as a candidate at the Royal College of Physicians. The next year, in 1726, he became a full fellow of the college. This meant he was a recognized and important doctor in London.

Also in 1726, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and famous group of scientists. Being a Fellow meant he was considered one of the best thinkers and researchers of his time.

His career continued to grow. From 1727 until he died in 1739, he held two very important jobs. He was the physician-general to the army, meaning he was the chief doctor for all the soldiers. He was also the physician in ordinary to King George II. This meant he was the King's personal doctor!

Later Life and Legacy

John Hollings was known for being very smart, not just in medicine but also in classical studies and general knowledge. He wrote only one major publication, a speech called the Harveian Oration in 1734. This speech was given to other doctors in London. It talked about human nature and health. An English version of his speech was published the same year.

John Hollings passed away on May 10, 1739, in Pall Mall, London. He had a wife named Jane, and they had a son, also named John Hollings, who also became a doctor. They also had two daughters, Jane and Margaret.

John Hollings left behind a legacy as a highly educated and respected physician who served both the army and the King.
