He married three times during his life. His first marriage was to Anne Ogilvy on September 14, 1733. Later, on October 30, 1762, he married Jane Oliphant. His third marriage was to Lady Elizabeth Leslie on June 10, 1767. Lady Elizabeth was the sister of David Leslie, 6th Earl of Leven.
In 1747, John Hope was given an important job. He became a Curator bonis for his half-uncle, the 4th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell. A Curator bonis is like a trustee who manages the money and affairs for someone who cannot do it themselves.
