Lady Henrietta Hope (born in 1750, died on January 1, 1786) was a kind British woman from Scotland. She was known for helping others and giving money to good causes. Henrietta was a very close friend of Willielma Campbell, who built chapels. A chapel in Bristol, called Hope Chapel, was named after Henrietta.

Henrietta's Early Life

Henrietta Hope was born in Scotland in 1750. Her parents were Lady Anne Ogilvy and John Hope. Her father was a Scottish nobleman, the second Earl of Hopetoun. Sadly, her mother passed away in 1759 when Henrietta was still a child. Henrietta grew up in a large family with many brothers and sisters.

People say that Henrietta became very religious after a difficult sea journey from Dover to Calais.

Friendship and Chapel Building

In 1772, Henrietta met Willielma Campbell, and they quickly became best friends. In 1780, they traveled to London and met Selina, the Countess of Huntingdon.

Willielma Campbell spent her time building chapels, which are places for religious worship. She bought a house in Matlock, where she and Lady Hope moved. This house later became a chapel in 1786.

In 1784, Henrietta and Willielma visited the spa town of Hotwells near Bristol. They decided to build a new chapel there.

Hope Chapel's Legacy

Henrietta Hope died in Bristol on January 1, 1786. She left £2,500 in her will to help build the chapel. Willielma Campbell agreed to make sure the chapel was finished. However, Willielma Campbell also passed away in 1786.

Because of this, Willielma's helper, Lady Maxwell, completed the chapel. It was named Hope Chapel in honor of Henrietta Hope. The chapel was located on Granby Hill in Bristol and officially opened in August 1788.
