Who Was John Howe?

John Howe was born into an important family. His father was John Grubham Howe, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's government. His father also held a big job called Paymaster General. This person was in charge of paying the army and navy.

Early Life and Family

In 1712, John Howe took over a role from his father. He became the Vice-Admiral of Gloucestershire. This was a special title, often given to important people in coastal areas. It meant he had some authority over naval matters in that region. However, he only held this position for a few years. He was removed from the job in 1715.

His Time in Politics

John Howe became a Member of Parliament himself. He represented different areas, called constituencies. From 1727, he was the MP for Gloucester. Later, from 1729 to 1741, he represented Wiltshire. This meant he helped make decisions and laws for the country.

In 1730, he also inherited a lot of land and properties. These came from his cousin, Sir Richard Grobham Howe, 3rd Baronet. These estates were located in both Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Becoming a Baron

On May 12, 1741, John Howe received a very special honor. He was given the title of Baron Chedworth. A Baron is a noble, a person of high rank in the British system. This meant he became a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. Sadly, he passed away the very next year.

Family and Legacy

John Howe married Dorothy in 1712. She was the daughter of Henry Frederick Thynne. Together, they had a large family. They had eight sons and five daughters. After John Howe passed away, his oldest son took over his title. His son became John Howe, 2nd Baron Chedworth.
