Who Was John Hussey-Montagu?
John Hussey-Montagu was an important figure in British politics during the 18th century. He was known as Lord Montagu later in his life. He came from a well-known family and played a role in the government by representing people in Parliament.
Early Life and Family
John Hussey-Montagu was born as John Hussey on 18 January 1747. He was the only son of Edward Hussey. His mother was Isabella. She was the widow of William Montagu, 2nd Duke of Manchester and the eldest daughter of John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu.
In 1749, his father, Edward Hussey, added the name Montagu to his own. This happened after the Duke of Montagu, John's grandfather, passed away. This was a way to keep the Montagu family name going. In 1762, John's father was given the title of Baron. After this, John became known as The Hon. John Hussey-Montagu.
Becoming a Politician
John Hussey-Montagu began his political career in 1772. He was elected to Parliament for the area called Windsor. This election happened on 9 November 1772, after the previous representative, Richard Tonson, died.
He was very popular in Windsor. The people of Windsor re-elected him in several general elections. These elections took place in 1774, 1780, and 1784. This shows he was a trusted representative for many years. In July 1784, his father was given an even higher title, becoming the Earl of Beaulieu. At this point, John Hussey-Montagu started using the special title Lord Montagu. This was a courtesy title, meaning it was used out of respect for his father's new rank.
His Later Years
John Hussey-Montagu, Lord Montagu, passed away at the age of 40. He died on 25 June 1787. He was never married and did not have any children. He was buried on 10 July 1787 in a place called Warkton in Northamptonshire.
After his death, another politician named The Earl of Mornington was elected to represent Windsor in Parliament. John Hussey-Montagu had only one sibling, a sister named Isabella. However, she had passed away earlier in 1772. Because John had no children and his sister had also passed away, the title of Earl of Beaulieu ended when his father died in 1802.
