Later, he studied to become a priest. He attended Cathedral College in Brooklyn and the Immaculate Conception Seminary in New York. On June 9, 1951, he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of Brooklyn.
After becoming a priest, he worked at St. Mel Parish in Flushing, New York for six years. He then served as an assistant secretary and later as a secretary to two different bishops in Brooklyn.
Serving as an Auxiliary Bishop
On December 13, 1972, Pope Paul VI chose John Snyder to be an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Brooklyn. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop lead the diocese.

Leading the Diocese of St. Augustine
In October 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Snyder to lead the Diocese of St. Augustine in Florida. He began his new role on December 5, 1979.
His special motto as a bishop was "Peace in Christ." This motto showed his belief in finding peace through faith.

When Bishop Snyder turned 75 on October 25, 2000, he offered his resignation. This is a rule in the Catholic Church for bishops. Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation on December 12, 2000.
Even after retiring, he continued to help the diocese for a short time. He served as an administrator until a new bishop was chosen.
Bishop Snyder left a lasting mark on the community. Bishop John J. Snyder High School in Jacksonville, Florida, is named after him. He often visited the school and even attended many of their home sports games.
John Snyder passed away in Jacksonville on September 27, 2019. He was 93 years old.
