John Jackson's Early Life and Education
John Jackson was the son of another minister named Arthur Jackson. In 1638, John started studying at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He finished his first degree there in 1643.
A year later, in 1644, he became a "fellow" at Queens' College, Cambridge. A fellow is like a special teacher or researcher at a university. This happened during a time when the English Parliament was checking on the university.
A Time of Big Changes
England was going through many changes in the 1600s. In 1650, John Jackson faced a challenge. He refused to take an oath that supported the new rules of Parliament. Because of this, he was removed from his position at Queens' College.
Later, Oliver Cromwell, a powerful leader in England, made John Jackson the rector (head minister) of a church in London called St Benet Paul's Wharf.
However, more changes came in 1662. A new law, called the Uniformity Act, said that all ministers had to use the Book of Common Prayer in their church services. John Jackson refused to do this. As a result, he was again removed from his church. He also lost another church position in a place called Molesey in Surrey. Ministers who were removed for not following these rules were known as ejected ministers.
Later Years and Writings
Even after losing his church jobs, John Jackson continued to live in Molesey. He spent his time writing. He also earned money by checking and correcting books before they were printed.
Later in his life, he became a preacher in a town called Brentford. John Jackson passed away in the London area.
What John Jackson Wrote
John Jackson wrote a few important books. One was called Index Biblicus, which was a Bible concordance. A concordance helps people find words and topics in the Bible. He also wrote a special memory book about his father in 1682. This was part of a larger work called Annotations upon the Whole Book of Isaiah.
