John Joseph Hayes (born June 27, 1895 – died November 8, 1979) was a famous Irish hurler. Hurling is a very old and exciting team sport played with a stick (a hurley) and a small ball (a sliotar). John Joe, as he was known, played for his local club, Moycarkey–Borris. He also played for the Tipperary county team, which is one of the top teams in Ireland. He was known for playing as a corner-back, a defensive position.

John Joe first joined the Tipperary senior hurling team in 1917. He played for Tipperary for ten years, which is a long time!
