Who Was John Kennedy?
John Kennedy was born in November 1653. He became the 7th Earl of Cassilis on 22 September 1668. This meant he inherited important titles and a special place in Scottish society. An Earl is a noble rank, like a duke or a baron. These titles were passed down through families for many years.
Working for Scotland
John Kennedy had a very important job in the Scottish government. From 1689 to 1695, he was part of a group that managed the country's money. This group was called the Commission of the Treasurer of Scotland.

The Treasurer of Scotland was like the country's chief financial officer. Their job was to look after all the government's money. This included collecting taxes and deciding how the money should be spent. It was a big responsibility to help run the country's finances.
His Family and Legacy
John Kennedy was married twice and had several children. His first wife was Lady Susannah Hamilton. They married on 26 December 1668. They had three children together:

John Kennedy, Lord Kennedy, married Elizabeth Hutchinson. They had one son named John. This grandson later became the 8th Earl of Cassilis.
John Kennedy's second wife was Mary Fox. They married on 27 February 1697 or 1698. They also had three children:

Passing on the Title
When John Kennedy died on 23 July 1701, his titles did not go to his oldest son. This was because his son, Lord Kennedy, had died before him. Instead, the titles of 9th Lord Kennedy and 7th Earl of Cassilis passed to his grandson, John.
John Kennedy was also a member of a group called the Freemasons. He belonged to the Kilwinning Lodge.
