John L. Sampson (born June 17, 1965) is an American former politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. Sampson represented a part of Brooklyn in the New York State Senate. This is a group of lawmakers who help make rules for New York State. He served in this role from 1997 to 2015. John Sampson has roots in Guyana, a country in South America. He also led the Democratic group in the State Senate for a few years.
John Sampson's Early Life and Learning
John Sampson went to Brooklyn College and earned a degree in Political Science. This means he studied how governments work. After that, he went to Albany Law School. He earned a law degree there in 1991. He was also part of the school's Board of Trustees. This board helps guide the school.
Before becoming a politician, Sampson worked as a lawyer. He worked for the Department of Environmental Conservation. This group helps protect nature. He also worked for the Legal Aid Society of New York. This organization helps people who cannot afford a lawyer. In 1994, he started working for a law firm called Alter and Barbaro, Esqs.
Serving in the State Senate
John Sampson was first chosen to be a State Senator in 1996. He started his work in the New York State Senate in 1997. He served there until July 2015. As a senator, he helped make laws and decisions for New York State.
During his time in the Senate, Sampson held important roles. He was the chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee. This group makes sure senators act fairly. He also led the Senate Administrative Regulations Review Commission. This group checks new rules made by state agencies. He was the first African-American to lead the Senate Judiciary Committee. This committee deals with laws and courts.
In 2005, Sampson tried to become the District Attorney for Kings County, New York. This person is the main prosecutor for the county. However, he did not win that election.
On June 15, 2009, John Sampson became a leader for the Democratic group in the State Senate. He was in charge of how the group worked each day. He also helped plan what laws they would try to pass. He worked with another leader named Malcolm Smith. In December 2012, he left this leadership role. Andrea Stewart-Cousins then became the new leader.
