John Marquess Latting (born April 10, 1900 – died March 21, 1969) was an American first baseman who played in the Negro Leagues during the 1920s. He was known for his skills on the baseball field. However, he also had an interesting life off the field, including a career as a dentist.

Early Life and Education
John Latting was born in Helena, Arkansas. He went to Wilberforce University, a famous historically Black university. While at Wilberforce, he was a star player on the school's baseball team. In fact, he was the team captain in 1922, which shows his leadership skills.
In 1925, John Latting was involved in an important legal case. He was one of eleven people who were defended by a very famous lawyer named Clarence Darrow. They were found innocent in a widely discussed court case.
Playing Baseball
In 1926, Latting played professional baseball for a short time. He joined the Dayton Marcos team. This team was led by Eddie Huff, who had been Latting's teammate at Wilberforce University. Playing in the Negro Leagues was a big achievement for many athletes of that era.
A Different Path: Dentistry
After his time playing baseball, John Latting continued his education. He graduated from Wilberforce University in 1927. He then went on to study dentistry at Howard University. He earned his degree in dentistry in 1932.
John Latting passed away in Detroit, Michigan in 1969. He was 68 years old. His life showed a blend of athletic talent and a commitment to education and a professional career.
