John Lauder (surgeon) facts for kids
John Lauder (born 1683, died 1737) was an important Scottish surgeon. He was like the president, called a Deacon, of a group of surgeons in Edinburgh. He held this important job four different times! John Lauder's Career as a Surgeon
John Lauder was born in Edinburgh in 1683. He started his training as a surgeon by becoming an apprentice to Robert Campbell.
In 1714, John Lauder applied for a job at George Heriot's Hospital. This hospital needed a new surgeon. John Lauder got the job and worked there from 1714 until 1737.
Leading the Surgeons' Group
In 1714, John Lauder was chosen as the Deacon of the Incorporation of Surgeons. This was like being the head or president of the surgeons' organization.
That same year, the Edinburgh Town Council asked him to join a special group. Their job was to help keep the peace during a time of trouble called the Jacobite rising of 1715. This was a period when some people wanted a different king.
John Lauder was elected Deacon of the Incorporation of Surgeons four times. He served a total of seven years in this important role between 1714 and 1737. He passed away in March 1737 while he was still serving as Deacon.
John Lauder's Family
John Lauder's father was a merchant in Edinburgh. His grandfather was Sir John Lauder, 1st Baronet, a well-known person from Fountainhall.
John Lauder married Isabella Preston, who was born in 1683. Isabella's father, George Preston, was also a surgeon in Edinburgh. Her grandfather, Robert Preston, was a knight and a judge. He was known as Lord Preston.
Isabella Preston and her father George were among the last members of the Preston family from Valleyfield and Gorton.
His Son, George Lauder
John Lauder's son, George Lauder, also became a surgeon. He was a Fellow of the Incorporation of Surgeons, just like his father. Sadly, George Lauder died in Edinburgh in May 1752 after falling from his horse.
