John Mahon (born in 1749, died in 1834) was an Irish musician who was very talented. He was a composer (someone who writes music), a clarinetist (who plays the clarinet), a violinist (who plays the violin), and a viola player (who plays the viola). He was known for his amazing skills with these instruments.

Early Life and Musical Family

John Mahon was born in Oxford, England. His family was from Ireland and many of them were musicians. His father, William Mahon, moved to Oxford in the 1740s. He played in an orchestra at the Holywell Music Room. John also had siblings named James, William, and Sarah, who were all musicians too.

Performing Career

John Mahon first performed the clarinet in 1772. This was at the Holywell Music Room in Oxford. He played a special piece called a clarinet concerto. Mahon was also part of the Oxford Volunteers Band.

In 1773, he started playing in London. By 1777, he moved there to live with his brother William. In London, John performed at many famous places. These included Covent Garden, Hanover Square, the Haymarket, the Pantheon, and the Ranelagh.

John Mahon often visited his hometown of Dublin, Ireland. In 1783, he became a member of the Royal Society of Musicians. This was a group that helped musicians. He played at their yearly concerts at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1794, 1795, and 1797.

Later Life and Challenges

John Mahon married Margaret Perry in Dublin on June 30, 1792. Later in his life, John faced some tough times. In 1814, he had financial difficulties. The Royal Society of Musicians noted he was "infirm," meaning he was not well. They gave him £40 to help him out.

On October 6, 1816, Mahon had an accident. He seriously injured his left hand. This injury would take a few months to heal. The Royal Society of Musicians gave him another £30 to help with his recovery. John Mahon eventually retired to Dublin in 1825.

He passed away in Dublin in January 1834. This was due to poor health. After his death, his wife, Mrs. Mahon, received some money each month to help her.
