John Monds was born on June 17, 1965. He is an American politician and activist. He ran for Governor of Georgia in 2010 as a Libertarian. He was the first African American to be on the ballot for Governor in Georgia.
In 2008, Monds made history. He became the first Libertarian Party candidate in Georgia and the United States to get over 1,000,000 votes. This happened when he ran for the Public Service Commission District 1 seat. He received 1,076,726 votes, which was 33.4% of the total. This was the highest number of votes a Libertarian candidate had ever received in a U.S. election at any level at that time. Later, Gary Johnson received more votes in the 2012 presidential election.
In 2020, Monds sought the Libertarian nomination for President of the United States. He was eliminated during the Libertarian Party's online national convention. Jo Jorgensen won the nomination instead.

About John Monds
Early Life and Education
John Monds graduated from J.M. Tate High School in Gonzalez, Florida, in 1983. He then attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1987, he earned a bachelor's degree in banking and finance from Morehouse.
Awards and Honors
Monds has received several awards for his service. In 2002, he earned the Superior Service Award from the Mu Beta Beta Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. The next year, in 2003, he was named Omega Man of the Year by the same fraternity. He also received the Superior Service Award from the fraternity's state organization in 2003. In 2005, the Grady County NAACP named him Man of the Year.
Community Involvement
John Monds is very active in his community. As a member and President of the Grady County NAACP, he has taught financial literacy classes. He also helped organize the Freedom Day Health Fair. He has supported citizens who felt they were treated unfairly.
Monds has been a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity for twenty years. He has held many leadership roles at local and state levels, including President of the Mu Beta Beta chapter. He also serves on the Grady County Planning Commission. He is on the Grady County Habitat for Humanity board. Monds is also part of the Libertarian Party of Georgia Executive Committee. He helps with the Grady County Fine Arts Project.
Family Life
John Monds lives in Cairo, Georgia, with his wife, Kathaleena Edward Monds. They have four children: Akintunde, Cazembe, Halima, and Malik.
