John Mordaunt, 2nd Baron Mordaunt (1508–1571) was an important English nobleman. He was a baron, which is a title of nobility. This meant he was a member of the House of Lords, a part of the English Parliament. Before becoming a baron, he also served in the House of Commons of England. This was another part of Parliament, where people were elected to represent different areas.
John Mordaunt was born in 1508. His father was John Mordaunt, 1st Baron Mordaunt. When his father passed away in 1562, John inherited the title of Baron Mordaunt. He was also made a knight in 1533. Being a knight was a special honor given by the King or Queen.

He was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Essex and High Sheriff of Hertfordshire from 1540 to 1541. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. They were in charge of keeping the peace and making sure laws were followed in their county.
From 1554, he was the Constable of Hertford Castle. A constable was like a manager or guardian of the castle. He would have been responsible for its upkeep and security.

John Mordaunt also became a Privy Councillor in 1553. A Privy Councillor was a trusted advisor to the King or Queen. They would help the monarch make important decisions about the country.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedfordshire. He served as an MP in 1553, and again in 1554 and 1555. As an MP, he represented the people of Bedfordshire in the House of Commons of England.

John Mordaunt passed away in 1571. He was buried in Turvey, a place important to his family.
He was married two times. His first wife was Ella Fitzlewis. They had many children together, including several sons and six daughters. His second wife was Joan Fermor.
After his death, his son Lewis became the 3rd Baron Mordaunt.
