John Morgan was the youngest son of William Morgan and his wife Blanche. His family was very well-known in Wales.

Inheriting the Family Estate

John had two older brothers. Sadly, they passed away before him. In 1700, his eldest brother, Sir Thomas Morgan, died without any children. This meant that John inherited the family's large Tredegar Estate. An estate is a big area of land with a large house on it.

Becoming a Politician

John Morgan was a strong supporter of the Whig political party. The Whigs were one of the main political groups in Britain at the time.

In 1701, John became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Monmouthshire. An MP is someone elected to represent an area in the House of Commons. He took over this role from his brother. John continued to be an MP until his death in 1720.

In the same year, he also became the custos rotulorum for the county. This was an important role, like being the chief record keeper and head of the local justice system.

More Important Roles

In 1715, John Morgan inherited even more land and property. He received Rhiwperra Castle and the area of Gwynllwg from his uncle, also named John Morgan.

He also gained two more important titles:

  • Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire
  • Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire

A Lord Lieutenant was the King's representative in a county. They were responsible for keeping law and order and organizing the local military.

His Family

John Morgan was married to Martha Vaughan. They had two sons and one daughter.

  • Their first son, Sir William Morgan, inherited the Tredegar Estate.
  • Their second son, Thomas Morgan, received the Rhiwpera estate.
  • Their daughter, Martha, married a very important person, the 3rd Earl of Oxford.

John Morgan passed away in 1720. He was buried on March 19, 1720, in a place called Machen.
