John Muir's Early Life in Scotland
John Muir was born in this very house on April 21, 1838. It was a three-story stone building on High Street in Dunbar. His father, Daniel Muir, ran a successful food store there. John was the third child in his family.
In 1849, when John was 11, his family moved to the United States. He only visited Dunbar once more in 1893. However, he stayed in touch with his relatives until he passed away in 1914.
Turning the Birthplace into a Museum
For many years, people in Dunbar didn't widely remember John Muir's connection to the town. Then, in the 1960s, American fans of Muir started visiting Dunbar. They wanted to learn about where their hero grew up.
This interest led to the creation of a small museum. It opened in 1981 in the upper part of the restored building. Over time, different groups helped run the museum.
In 1998, a special group called the John Muir Birthplace Trust was formed. This charity worked with local councils and other groups. Their goal was to protect John Muir's birthplace. They also wanted to make it a great place to learn about his work. The project began in 2002, and the new center opened in August 2003. By February 2012, the museum had welcomed 100,000 visitors!
