John Muir's Birthplace is a special museum in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. It celebrates the life and work of John Muir, a famous Scottish-American conservationist. He was a champion for protecting nature.

Who Was John Muir?

John Muir was a naturalist and preservationist. This means he studied nature and worked hard to protect wild places. He was born in this very house at 126 High Street on April 21, 1838. He was the third child of Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye Muir. His father ran a successful shop in the building, selling grain and food.

Moving to America

In 1849, when John was 11 years old, his family moved to the United States. John Muir only visited Dunbar once after that, in 1893. However, he stayed in touch with his relatives until he passed away in 1914.

The Birthplace Becomes a Museum

For a long time, people in Dunbar didn't widely remember John Muir's connection to the town. But in the 1960s, fans from America started visiting Dunbar. They wanted to learn more about where their hero came from.

A small museum was first opened in the building in 1981. Over the years, different groups helped run it. Today, the John Muir Birthplace Trust owns the building. This trust is a charity that formed in 1998. Their goal is to keep John Muir's birthplace safe and to teach people about his important work. The current museum opened its doors in August 2003. By February 2012, more than 100,000 people had visited!
