John Murray, 2nd Earl of Dunmore (born October 31, 1685 – died April 18, 1752) was an important Scottish nobleman and a high-ranking general in the British Army. He was also known by other titles like Viscount of Fincastle.

John Murray was the second son of Charles Murray, the 1st Earl of Dunmore. His grandfather was John Murray, the 1st Marquess of Atholl. In 1704, John became the heir to his father's titles and lands after his older brother, James, passed away. When his father died in 1710, John officially became the Earl of Dunmore.

A Military Leader

John Murray had a successful career in the military. He rose through the ranks to become a general in the British Army.

Taking Part in Wars

In 1719, John Murray was one of the leaders of the British forces during the Capture of Vigo. This was a successful military action that happened during a conflict called the War of the Quadruple Alliance. He helped lead the British to victory in this important battle.

A Scottish Representative

Besides his military work, John Murray also played a role in politics.

Serving in Parliament

John Murray was a Scottish Representative Peer in the House of Lords. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland's nobility in the British Parliament. He served in this role from 1713 to 1715, and then again from 1727 until he passed away in 1752.

John Murray had three younger brothers. Two of them also became generals in the British Army, just like him.
