John Nathaniel Wilson (born 1822 – died 14 November 1895) was an important politician in New Zealand. He worked as a lawyer and served in the country's government.
John Wilson's Legal Career
Before coming to New Zealand, John Wilson worked as a lawyer in England. He was a barrister, which means he argued cases in court, and a solicitor, who prepares legal documents.
In 1859, he moved to New Zealand and started his own law firm in Napier. Soon after, he became the Crown Prosecutor for the Hawke's Bay area. A Crown Prosecutor is a lawyer who works for the government to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes.
He held this important role multiple times. In 1874, he welcomed Arthur Cotterill as a partner in his firm, which then became known as Wilson and Cotterill. John Wilson retired from his law practice in 1891.
Serving in the Legislative Council
In 1877, John Wilson was chosen to join the New Zealand Legislative Council. This council was like an upper house of parliament, helping to make laws. He was appointed by George Grey, who was the Premier (like a prime minister) at the time.
His appointment caused some debate because it happened during a time when the government's future was uncertain. The Governor, Lord Normanby, first hesitated to approve it but eventually did.
Wilson was a member of the government's Executive Council from 1878 to 1879. This council advised the Governor. He strongly supported the Liberal party, which was working to introduce new reforms and changes in New Zealand. He resigned from the Legislative Council in 1893 and moved back to England.
Later Life and Death
John Wilson passed away in Weybridge, England, on 14 November 1895. He was 73 years old.
