John Noel (born November 7, 1659 – died December 26, 1718) was a British politician from North Luffenham, Rutland. He served as a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament, between 1711 and 1718.

John Noel was the seventh son of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Bertie. He was born on November 7, 1659.

Early Life and Education

John Noel began his studies at Middle Temple in 1676. This was a place where people learned about law. He continued to have rooms there until at least 1681.

In 1705, John Noel received a special degree called a Doctorate of Laws from Cambridge University. This happened while Queen Anne was present. It was a big honor for him.

Family and Relationships

In 1687, John Noel had a disagreement with Bennet Sherard, 2nd Baron Sherard at a horse race. This caused some talk among the important people in the area. However, things later became friendly between them.

On May 27, 1696, John Noel married Elizabeth Lady Irvine. She was the daughter of Bennet Sherard, which meant his former rival became his father-in-law! Elizabeth was also the sister of Bennet Sherard, 1st Earl of Harborough.

John and Elizabeth had at least two children:

  • Bridget (died 1729), who married David Colyear, Viscount Milsington.
  • Thomas (died 1788), who married Elizabeth Chapman.

Joining a Special Club

In May 1705, John Noel was invited to join a group called the Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. This was a social club where members would meet to eat and drink together. He had been a member before, but the club had stopped meeting in 1700. When it started again, he rejoined. To be part of the club, members had to choose a nickname. John Noel chose the nickname 'Wildhorse'.

Political Career

In the 1710 election, John Noel was chosen as a Member of Parliament for Rutland. He belonged to the Whig political party.

However, a powerful leader from the Tory party, the Earl of Nottingham, wanted to remove him from his seat. After a long hearing in the House of Commons, John Noel lost his position. A Tory politician named Richard Halford took his place.

John Noel ran for election again in the 1715 general election. This time, he was elected without anyone running against him for Rutland. He continued to serve as a Member of Parliament until he passed away.

John Noel died on December 26, 1718, at the age of 58.
