John O'Halloran is an Irish scientist and university leader. He teaches at a university and studies birds, which is called ornithology. In August 2021, he became the 16th President of University College Cork (UCC).
About John O'Halloran
John O'Halloran was born in Cork, Ireland. He was one of eight children. He went to Douglas Community School. Later, he studied Zoology at UCC. Zoology is the study of animals.
In 2009, he earned a special degree called a Doctor of Science (DSc). He got this for all the important research he published. Before working at UCC, he taught at Colby College in the United States. He also taught at the University of Wales in Cardiff. In 2024, he became a member of the Royal Irish Academy. This is a group of top experts in Ireland.
His Career at UCC
John O'Halloran became the 16th President of UCC in August 2021. He was 59 years old at the time. Before that, he was the interim president starting in September 2020. This means he was temporarily in charge.
He also held other important jobs at UCC. He was the deputy president and registrar. He was also in charge of teaching and learning. He helped start the Quercus Talented Students Programme. This program helps students who are very good at something. He also helped lead the UCC Green Campus forum. This group works to make the university more environmentally friendly. He also guided UCC's first Academic Strategy. This was a plan for how the university would teach and research.
Studying Birds and Nature
John O'Halloran is an expert in ornithology, which is the study of birds. He earned his PhD in 1987. By 2021, he held a special teaching position in zoology at UCC. The Irish Examiner newspaper called him a zoologist and an ecologist. An ecologist studies how living things interact with their environment.
The Irish Times newspaper said that O'Halloran has written many research papers. These papers focus on how changes in land use and climate change affect our world. He has also guided 75 students who were working on their PhDs or Master's degrees.
O'Halloran was the vice-president of the British Trust for Ornithology. He was also on the board of BirdWatch Ireland. These groups work to protect birds. He is also the chairman of the board for Fota Wildlife Park. This is a popular place where people can see animals. For over 20 years, he has been the chairman of the biology and ecology panel for the BT Young Scientist competition. He also advised the European Environment Agency.
Family Life
Professor O'Halloran grew up in Douglas, a part of Cork City. He is married to Professor Deirdre Murray. She is a medical doctor who also studied at UCC. She is now the director of the National Cancer Registry. John and Deirdre have three children.
