John O'Neill, 1st Viscount O'Neill (born 16 January 1740 – died 18 June 1798) was an important Irish politician. He held several important positions in the Irish government during his lifetime. He was known for his work in the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament of Ireland at the time.

Who Was John O'Neill?

John O'Neill was a significant figure in Irish politics during the late 1700s. He came from a well-known family and followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a politician. He worked to represent the people of Ireland in their government.

Early Life and Family

John O'Neill was the son of Charles O'Neill (died 1769). His father was also a Member of Parliament, representing a place called Randalstown. John's mother was Catherine Brodrick. She was the daughter of St John Brodrick from Midleton, in County Cork. John O'Neill grew up in a family that was involved in public life.

Starting His Political Career

John O'Neill began his political journey in 1760. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Randalstown. This was a special assembly where laws were made for Ireland. He held this position for many years, until 1783. After that, he represented County Antrim from 1783 to 1793.

Rising Through the Ranks

As John O'Neill's political career grew, he received more important roles. In 1781, he became a member of the Irish Privy Council. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King in Ireland.

Later, in 1793, he was given a special title. He became Baron O'Neill of Shane's Castle. This meant he was part of the Peerage of Ireland, a group of high-ranking noble families. Just two years later, in 1795, he received an even higher honour. He was made Viscount O'Neill, also of Shane's Castle.

His Legacy and Family

Lord O'Neill married Henrietta Boyle in 1777. She was the daughter of Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan.

John O'Neill passed away on 18 June 1798, at the age of 58. He died during a historical event called the Irish Rebellion of 1798, specifically during the Battle of Antrim. His son, Charles, took over his title as Viscount. Charles was later given the title of Earl O'Neill in 1800.
