John O. Agwunobi is a doctor and a leader in public health and business. He was born in Scotland and has Nigerian and American roots. He used to be the head of Herbalife Nutrition, a company that sells health products. Before that, he worked at Walmart, helping with their health and wellness services.
Mr. Agwunobi also held important jobs in the United States government. He was the Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He also served as Florida's top health official.

Early Life and Education
John Agwunobi was born in Dundee, Scotland. His father was a doctor from Nigeria, and his mother was Scottish. When he was a teenager, his family moved to Nigeria. There, he went to high school and university. He studied medicine at the University of Jos, where his father was a professor.
He also earned a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. Later, he received a master's degree in business from Georgetown University. He completed his training to become a children's doctor (pediatrician) at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC. His brother, Andrew Agwunobi, is also a leader in healthcare.
Working in Public Service
Before working for the U.S. government, John Agwunobi was Florida's Secretary of Health. He held this important role from 2000 to 2005. During his time, he led Florida's health response to four big hurricanes in 2004. He also guided the state's efforts to prepare for and handle serious health threats.
From 2006 to 2007, Mr. Agwunobi served as the 12th Assistant Secretary for Health. This is a very high-ranking health position in the U.S. government. In this role, he oversaw important health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He was also a member of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which is like a uniformed service for health professionals. He held the rank of a four-star admiral. He also represented the U.S. on the World Health Organization (WHO) executive board.
Career in Business
Leading Health at Walmart
In 2007, John Agwunobi joined Walmart. He became their top medical expert. His job was to help Walmart grow its health and wellness services. He led a large team of over 65,000 employees. This team worked in Walmart's pharmacies, eye care centers, and health clinics. He helped lower the cost of prescription medicines for customers. He left Walmart in 2014.
Working at Herbalife Nutrition
In 2016, Mr. Agwunobi joined Herbalife Nutrition. This company sells health and wellness products. He started as their chief health and nutrition officer. By 2020, he became the chief executive officer (CEO) and executive chairman of the company. He focused on helping the company invest in products for weight management and sports performance. John Agwunobi left Herbalife Nutrition in October 2022.
