John Otway Cuffe, 2nd Earl of Desart (born 1788, died 1820) was an important person in Irish and British politics. He was a nobleman and a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Education

John Otway Cuffe was born on February 20, 1788. His parents were Lady Anne Browne and Otway Cuffe, 1st Earl of Desart. His grandfather was the Earl of Altamont.

He went to some famous schools. First, he studied at Eton College in 1802. Then, he attended Christ Church, Oxford starting in 1805. Later, he also studied at the University of Edinburgh in 1807. When his father passed away in 1804, John inherited his father's noble titles.

Political Career

From 1808 to 1817, John Otway Cuffe served as a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented a place called Bossiney in Cornwall, England. An MP is like a representative who speaks for the people in their area in the government.

He also worked as a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury from 1809 to 1810. This job involved helping to manage the government's money.

Besides his work in Parliament, he had a home called Desart Court in County Kilkenny, Ireland. He also served as the Mayor of Kilkenny from 1809 to 1810.

Family Life

On October 7, 1817, John Otway Cuffe married Catherine O'Connor. She was the daughter of Maurice Nugent O'Connor.

They had one son together:

  • John Otway O'Connor Cuffe (1818–1865). He later married Lady Elizabeth Lucy in 1842.

The Earl of Desart passed away on November 23, 1820. His only son, John Otway O'Connor Cuffe, inherited his titles and became the 3rd Earl of Desart. After his death, his wife Catherine remarried to Rose Lambart Price.
