John Ernest Leonard Oulton (born March 22, 1886 – died February 2, 1957) was a very important professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. He was known as the Regius Professor of Divinity from 1935 until he passed away. This means he held a special teaching position in the study of religion.

Early Life and Education

John Oulton was born in 1886. His father, Richard Charles Oulton, was also a church leader in a place called Glynn.

John went to school at Campbell College. After that, he studied at Trinity College Dublin, which is a famous university. He was a very bright student! He won a special medal for Latin in 1907 and another gold medal for Greek in 1909. This shows he was excellent at learning ancient languages.

Church and Teaching Career

In 1914, John Oulton became a priest. He worked as an assistant priest in places like Harold's Cross and St Stephen's Church in Dublin. Later, he became the main priest in Chapelizod and Monkstown, County Dublin.

Besides his church work, John Oulton also taught at Trinity College Dublin. From 1924 to 1930, he was an Assistant Lecturer in Divinity. This means he taught about religious studies. He also taught about the Bible from 1926 to 1929.

He became a Professor of Divinity in 1930. Then, in 1935, he was given the special title of Regius Professor of Divinity. He held this important role until he died in 1957.
