Sir John Pointz (died 1633) was an English landowner and politician who lived a long time ago. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is an important part of the English government. He is perhaps best remembered as the grandfather of James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, who became a very important leader in Ireland.

Sir John Pointz's Life

Sir John Pointz was the son of Sir Nicholas Poyntz. His family lived at a place called Iron Acton in Gloucestershire, England. His grandfather, also named Sir Nicholas Poyntz, was a courtier, meaning he worked closely with King Henry VIII.

Sir John had several important jobs in his county. In 1591 and 1592, he was the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire. This role was like being the chief law enforcement officer for the county. He also served as a J.P. in 1592, helping to keep order and deal with local legal matters.

Before 1593, he was given the title of "Sir," meaning he was knighted. In that same year, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Gloucestershire. This meant he represented his area in the House of Commons. From 1602, he was the Custos Rotulorum for Gloucestershire. This was a very important job, as he was in charge of all the county's records and the Justices of the Peace. He also owned the land and property of Iron Acton.

Sir John Pointz faced some financial challenges during his life. He passed away in 1633. He was buried at Iron Acton, the place where his family lived.

Sir John Pointz was married four times. His first wife was Ursula Sydenham. His second wife was Elizabeth Sydenham, and they had four sons and three daughters together. Among their children were Robert and Elizabeth. His third wife was Frances Newton. His fourth wife was Grissell Roberts, and they had two more sons and three daughters.

His son, Robert, later followed in his father's footsteps and also became a Member of Parliament for Gloucestershire. Sir John's daughter, Elizabeth, Lady Thurles, became the mother of a very famous person. Her son was James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, who grew up to be a leading statesman in Ireland.
