John Pollard was born in Plymouth, England. He was the second son of Walter Pollard. John went to a famous law school called the Middle Temple. This was a place where people learned to become lawyers and judges. In 1535, he became an "Autumn Reader," which was a teaching role at the law school. Later, in 1547, he became a "serjeant-at-law," a very respected type of lawyer.

Later, around 1545, he received land in Nuneham Courtney, where he lived. This land was given to him, possibly because of a relative who had helped the government with some big changes. In 1550, he took on a new role as vice-president of a special council that helped govern parts of Wales.

He continued his political career, being elected as a Member of Parliament for Oxfordshire in 1553 and 1554. He also represented Chippenham, Wiltshire in 1555.

In October 1555, he was honored with the title of Knight Bachelor.
