Sir John Ramsden (born 1594 – died March 1646) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons (a law-making group) at different times from 1628 to 1640. Sir John fought for the King's army, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War. Sadly, he died while fighting at a battle called the Siege of Newark.

Early Life and Family

John Ramsden was born in 1594. He was the son of William Ramsden. His family lived near Longley in Huddersfield. In 1619, John was given the special title of 'Sir' (knighted). When his father passed away in 1623, John inherited the large estate of Huddersfield.

Political Career

In 1628, John Ramsden was chosen by the people to be a Member of Parliament for Pontefract. A year later, in 1629, he bought another large estate called Almondbury. From 1636 to 1637, he held an important local job. This job was called High Sheriff of Yorkshire.

In April 1640, Sir John was again elected as an MP for Pontefract. This time, it was for a short meeting of Parliament.

Role in the English Civil War

When the English Civil War began, Sir John Ramsden decided to support the King. He joined the Royalist side.

In 1644, soldiers from the Parliamentary Army (the King's opponents) captured him at Selby. He was sent to the Tower of London. But in August 1644, he was traded for one of their own soldiers who the King had captured.

In 1645, Sir John was a Colonel. He led a group of soldiers defending Pontefract Castle. He even helped talk about giving up the castle to the other side. He died during the siege of Newark in March 1646. He was buried at Newark parish church on March 27.

Personal Life

Sir John Ramsden was married twice. His first wife was Margaret Freshville. They had two sons, William and John. His second wife was Anne Pool. She was the widow of Alderman Pool from London.
