Who Was John Rogers?
John Rogers came from a family of leaders. His uncles, Tahlonteeskee and John Jolly, were also Principal Chiefs of the Cherokee Nation West before him. This shows that leadership often ran in families within the Cherokee Nation.
The Cherokee Nation West
The Cherokee Nation West was formed by Cherokee people who had moved from their traditional lands in the southeastern United States. They moved west to new territories, mainly in what is now Arkansas and Oklahoma. These people were often called the "Old Settlers" because they moved before many others.
Why Did They Move West?
Many Cherokee people moved west because of pressure from the United States government. They hoped to find peace and build new lives away from the conflicts over land. They worked to set up their own government and communities in their new homes.
A Time of Change: The 1839 Election
John Rogers was elected Principal Chief on October 11, 1839. This election happened during a very challenging time for the Cherokee people. There were different groups, or "factions," within the Nation.
The Old Settlers' Choice
Rogers was chosen by the "Old Settlers" faction. This group did not agree with a new "unity constitution" that had been created in September 1839. This constitution was an attempt to bring all the different Cherokee groups together.
A Short-Lived Effort
The group that supported John Rogers hoped to continue their own separate government. However, their efforts did not gain much support from other Cherokee people. The idea of a separate government for the Old Settlers ended the next year, as the different factions worked towards uniting the Cherokee Nation.
What is a Principal Chief?
A Principal Chief is the main leader of the Cherokee Nation. This role is similar to a president or governor. The Chief helps make important decisions for the people, represents the Nation, and works to protect their rights and culture.
