John Sebastian Little (born March 15, 1851 – died October 29, 1916) was an American politician. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives. He also briefly served as the 21st Governor of Arkansas. He had to step down from his role as governor due to health reasons.

Early Life and Education

John Sebastian Little was born on March 15, 1851. His birthplace was Jenny Lind, Arkansas. His parents were Jesse Eaton Little and Mary Elizabeth (Tatum) Little. He was also known by his nickname, "Bass."

Little attended Cane Hill College for a short time. After college, he worked as a school teacher. He also studied law. In 1873, he became a lawyer in Arkansas.

In 1876, he was elected as a prosecuting attorney. This job meant he represented the state in legal cases. He held this position until 1882.

On January 4, 1877, John Sebastian Little married Elizabeth Jane Irwin. Their wedding took place in Paris, Arkansas.

Political Career

John Sebastian Little began his political career in 1884. He served in the Arkansas House of Representatives. This is part of the state's government that makes laws.

In 1886, he became a judge. He served as a judge in the Twelfth Judicial Circuit for four years.

In 1894, Little was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This is part of the U.S. government that makes federal laws. He filled a term that was not finished by the previous representative. He continued to serve in the House until 1907.

Governor of Arkansas

In January 1907, John Sebastian Little became the Governor of Arkansas. This is the highest elected official in the state. However, shortly after taking office, he became unwell. This made it difficult for him to do his duties as governor.

Because of his health, he had to step down from his position. John Isaac Moore, who was the president of the Arkansas state senate, took over as acting governor.

Later Life and Passing

After leaving his role as governor, John Sebastian Little moved to the Texas gulf coast. He hoped to get better there. However, he never fully recovered from his illness.

He passed away on October 29, 1916, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was buried at the City Cemetery in Greenwood, Arkansas.
