John Sanders (1750–1825) was a talented English painter. He was known for his portraits and other artworks. He lived and worked in different parts of England during his life.

A Painter's Life

John Sanders was born in London in 1750. His father, John Saunders, was also a painter who worked with pastels. Young John showed artistic talent early on.

He studied at the Royal Academy in 1769. This was a famous art school in London. In 1770, he won a silver medal there, which was a great achievement!

Sanders started showing his paintings at the Royal Academy in 1771. He exhibited portraits and other types of art. For example, he showed a painting called A Philosopher. In the next few years, he continued to display his oil paintings, crayon drawings, and portraits.

Around 1778, Sanders moved to Norwich. Even though he moved, he still sent his paintings to the Royal Academy. These included portraits, like one of a musician named Dr. Crotch. He also painted views of Norwich Cathedral.

Later, in 1790, he moved again to Bath. He became a very successful portrait painter there. One of his good examples is a portrait of Judith, Countess of Radnor, painted in 1821. He even painted a portrait of Princess Charlotte of Wales.

Sanders married Rebecca Arnold around 1780 while living in Norwich. They had five daughters and one son. Their son, John Arnold Sanders, was born in Bath around 1801. He also became a landscape painter and a popular drawing teacher. He later moved to Canada in 1832.

John Sanders passed away in 1825 in Clifton.
