John Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley of Alderley (born 26 November 1766 – died 23 October 1850) was an important British politician and a member of the nobility. Before he became a Baron, he was known as Sir John Stanley, 7th Baronet, from 1807 to 1839. He played a role in the British government during his lifetime.

About John Stanley

John Stanley was the son of Sir John Thomas Stanley and Margaret Owen. His father held the title of the 6th Baronet. John also had a younger brother, Edward Stanley, who later became the Bishop of Norwich.

When his father passed away in 1807, John inherited the title of Baronet. He also took over the family home, Alderley Park, which is located in Cheshire, England. A Baronet is a special hereditary title, similar to a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

His mother, Margaret Owen, was the heiress of the Penrhos estate in Anglesey. In 1809, John was appointed as the High Sheriff of Anglesey, which was a local official role.

His Political Journey

John Stanley began his political career in 1790. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Wootton Bassett. He served in this role for six years, until 1796.

In the same year he became an MP, 1790, he was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for people who have made important discoveries in science.

Later in his life, in 1839, John Stanley was given a higher noble title. He was made a Baron Stanley of Alderley, which is a type of peerage. This meant he became a Lord and could sit in the House of Lords, which is the upper house of the British Parliament.

Lord Stanley of Alderley passed away at his home, Alderley Park, in October 1850. He was 83 years old. His son, Edward, inherited his titles. Edward had already become a peer himself, known as Baron Eddisbury.

His Family

In 1796, John Stanley married the Hon. Maria Josepha. She was the daughter of John Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield. Lady Stanley of Alderley lived until 1863.

John and Maria had a large family with 11 children. Seven of their daughters and two sons lived to adulthood. Their sons were twins:

  • The Hon. Edward John (1802–1869) was the elder twin. He was the one who inherited his father's title.
  • The Hon. William Owen Stanley (1802–1884) was the younger twin. He also became a politician, representing the Liberal Party.

Among their daughters were:

  • Lucy Anne, who married Marcus Theodore Hare.
  • Isabella Louisa (1801–1839), who married William Parry, a famous explorer. She was the mother of Edward Parry.
  • Matilda Abigail, who married Henry John Adeane.
