John Stephens inherited a house called Lypiatt House from his father. This house was near a town called Bisley. During the English Civil War, which was a big fight between different groups in England, Lypiatt House was used by the Parliament's soldiers.

However, some soldiers loyal to the King, led by Sir Jacob Astley, attacked the house. They set part of it on fire. Later, Sir Jacob Astley had to pay for the damage using his own money.
