John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the second person to hold the title of Earl of Atholl. He is remembered for fighting in the famous Battle of Flodden in 1513.
Who Was John Stewart?
John Stewart was born sometime after 1475. His parents were John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl and Eleanor Sinclair. He married Lady Janet Campbell. Her father was Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll.
John Stewart became the 2nd Earl of Atholl on 15 September 1512. This happened after his father passed away.
A Scottish Leader
As an Earl, John Stewart was a powerful leader in Scotland. He took part in the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513. This was a major battle between Scotland and England.
John Stewart was still alive in 1520. He passed away sometime before 1522.
His Children
John Stewart and Lady Janet Campbell had several children:
- John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl (1507–1542). He became the 3rd Earl of Atholl.
- Lady Janet Stewart. She married Alexander Gordon, Master of Sutherland.
- Lady Helen Stewart. She married John Lindsay, 5th Lord Lindsay of the Byres.
- Lady Elizabeth Stewart. She married Kenneth Mackenzie, 10th of Kintail.
- Lady Jean Stewart (died 19 April 1522). She married James Arbuthnot.
- Lady Isabel Stewart. She married James Herine or Herring of Lethendy.
- Margaret Stewart. She married Colin Campbell, 3rd of Glenorchy. Her son was "Grey Colin", Laird of Glenorchy.
