John Lindsay, 5th Lord Lindsay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Lindsay, the 5th Lord Lindsay of the Byres (who passed away in 1563), was an important Scottish judge and nobleman. He lived during a very exciting time in Scotland's history, when many big changes were happening.

John Lindsay was the son of John Lindsay of Pitcruvy. His grandfather was Patrick Lindsay, 4th Lord Lindsay. John became the Lord Lindsay of the Byres in 1526. This title meant he was a powerful noble. He also became the Sheriff of Fife, which was like being the main law enforcer in that area.

Early Life and Challenges

When John Lindsay was young, a powerful noble named the Earl of Angus was in charge of the young King James V of Scotland. Because the Earl of Angus was so strong, John Lindsay had to give up some of his family's land. This shows how difficult it could be for nobles during that time.

A Career in Law

John Lindsay became a judge in Scotland's highest court. On June 27, 1532, he was named an "Extraordinary Senator of the College of Justice." Later, in 1541, he became an "Extraordinary Lord of Session." This meant he was part of the group of top judges who heard important cases. He was involved in major court cases, including those of Sir John Borthwick and James Hamilton of Finnart.

Serving the Crown

John Lindsay was present when King James V died at Falkland Palace. This was a very sad and important moment for Scotland.

After the king's death, John Lindsay played a key role in protecting the new queen, Mary, Queen of Scots. In 1543, when Mary was just a baby, John Lindsay and seven other lords took her from Linlithgow Palace to Stirling Castle. This was done to keep her safe.

Military and Peace Efforts

John Lindsay was also a military leader. In 1545, he helped lead Scottish forces to victory against England at the Battle of Ancrum Moor. This was an important battle for Scotland.

Later, during a time of big religious changes called the Scottish Reformation, John Lindsay (or perhaps his son, Patrick) helped bring peace. In 1559, he helped arrange a truce between the French soldiers of Mary of Guise and the Scottish Protestant leaders, known as the Lords of the Congregation, at Cupar Muir. This helped stop fighting and allowed for talks.

John Lindsay passed away in 1563, leaving behind a legacy of service to Scotland as a judge, a protector of the queen, and a leader in both war and peace.
