Patrick Lindsay, 4th Lord Lindsay facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patrick Lindsay, the 4th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, was an important figure in Scotland long ago. He was known for giving advice to King James IV and later to Queen Margaret Tudor. He passed away in 1526.

Patrick Lindsay's Life and Work

Patrick Lindsay had an interesting career in Scottish politics. A writer named Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie, who lived in the 1500s, wrote about him in his book History of Scotland. Pitscottie said that Patrick Lindsay gave important advice to Scottish nobles before a big battle.

Advice Before the Battle of Flodden

In 1513, there was a major battle called Flodden. According to Pitscottie, Patrick Lindsay suggested that the Scottish nobles should fight bravely. However, he also advised that King James IV should stay safe at home and not join the battle. Pitscottie even wrote that Patrick used a fun comparison. He said the battle was like betting a valuable gold coin against a tiny, bent halfpenny.

Working with Queen Margaret Tudor

After the Battle of Flodden, in December 1513, Patrick became an advisor to Margaret Tudor, who was the Queen. However, this role didn't last very long. Queen Margaret married the Earl of Angus, and then John Stewart, Duke of Albany became the ruler of Scotland (called a regent).

Sheriff of Fife

Later, in May 1524, Regent Albany gave Patrick an important job. Patrick, along with his son and grandson, were made joint Sheriffs of Fife. This meant they were in charge of keeping law and order in that area.

Patrick Lindsay's Family

Patrick Lindsay was married to Isabella Pitcairn. When Patrick passed away, his grandson, John Lindsay, became the next Lord Lindsay. John was the son of Patrick's son, John Lindsay of Pitcruvy.

Patrick Lindsay and the Historian

The historian Norman Macdougall has pointed out something interesting. Patrick Lindsay was actually the grandfather of the writer Robert Lindsay of Pitscottie. This family connection might mean that some of the stories Pitscottie wrote about Patrick are based on real events or family memories. However, it also means that Pitscottie might have made the Lindsays of Byres seem even more important than they were because they were his own family.
