Early Life and Education
John Stirling was the oldest son of William Stirling of Fairburn. He went to Harrow School, which is a famous school in England. After that, he studied at Magdalen College, Oxford, a well-known university.
Military Service
Sir John Stirling joined the Lovat Scouts in 1914. The Lovat Scouts were a special unit in the British Army, known for their skills in scouting and mountain warfare. He served with them for many years, until 1935. For his service, he was given the MBE award in 1919. This award recognizes people who have made a great impact through their work.

Sir John Stirling was very active in public life, especially in his local area of Ross and Cromarty in Scotland.
Local Government Role

His second son, Sir Roderick Stirling, also became a Lord Lieutenant later in his life, following in his father's footsteps.
