John Stoltenberg (born 1944) is an American writer and activist. He is also a magazine editor, college lecturer, and theater reviewer. He believes in a political idea called radical feminism, which focuses on making society fair for everyone. Since 2019, he has been the executive editor for DC Metro Theater Arts. He has written three books, including essays and a novel.
John Stoltenberg's Education and Career
John Stoltenberg studied philosophy in college, focusing on the philosophy of religion. He earned two advanced degrees: a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from Columbia University School of the Arts.
While in college, he started writing, producing, directing, and acting in plays. After graduating, he worked for a special theater group called The Open Theater. This group was known for its experimental plays, which tried new ways of telling stories. John also had his own plays performed in New York City. He even received a grant to help him continue writing plays.
Working as a Magazine Editor
In the 1980s, John Stoltenberg began working as a magazine editor. He was the managing editor for several well-known magazines. These included Essence, Working Woman, Lear's, and AARP: The Magazine.
Today, John is the executive editor and Communications Advisor for DC Metro Theater Arts. In this role, he writes about live theater in Washington, D.C. He publishes theater reviews, interviews with actors and directors, and essays about plays. In 2015, John helped produce a play called Aftermath. This play was based on an essay by Andrea Dworkin, a writer and activist who was his partner for many years.
