Early Parliament Roles

In 1653, Stone was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the City of London. He served in a special Parliament known as the Barebones Parliament. During this time, he also worked as a trustee for the Lord Mayor and the people of London. A trustee helps manage money and property for others.

Serving in the Protectorate Parliaments

In 1654, Stone was elected as an MP for Cirencester. He served in the First Protectorate Parliament. He also became one of the three Tellers of the Exchequer. These officials were responsible for receiving and paying out money for the government.

In 1655, Stone took on many important roles. He was part of the Trade Committee and the Trade and Navigation Committee, which dealt with how England traded with other countries. He also worked as an auditor, checking the money handled by state treasurers. An auditor makes sure money is spent correctly. Stone was also a commissioner for excise, dealing with taxes on goods, and an agent for wine licences, which allowed people to sell wine.

Stone was re-elected as an MP for Cirencester in 1656 for the Second Protectorate Parliament. In the same year, he became a commissioner for securing peace in London. This meant he helped keep order and safety in the city.

His political career continued in 1659 when he was again re-elected as an MP for Cirencester. This time, he served in the Third Protectorate Parliament.

Family Life

John Stone had a son named Richard, who passed away in 1661. John Stone was also the father of another John Stone, who later became an MP for Wallingford.
