John Symes (born January 11, 1879 – died September 23, 1944) was a British cricketer. He was part of the Great Britain team that won a gold medal in cricket. This happened at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris. It was the only time cricket has ever been an Olympic sport!
Early Life and Career
John Symes was born in Crediton, Devon, England. This was on January 11, 1879. He went to school at Queen Elizabeth's School, Crediton and Blundell's School. After his studies, he became a solicitor. This is a type of lawyer. He worked in his hometown of Crediton. He even took over his father's law business.
Symes also served his community in other ways. For over 40 years, he was a clerk for the Crediton Urban District Council. This council helped manage the local town. During the First World War, he joined the 6th Battalion Devonshire Regiment. For his service in the war, he received an award called the OBE in 1919. John Symes passed away in Crediton on September 23, 1944, at the age of 65.

John Symes loved playing cricket. He was a very good player. He was the captain of his local cricket team. He also played for another team called the Devon Dumplings.
His biggest cricket achievement was at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. He represented the Great Britain team. This was a very special event because it was the only time cricket was played at the Olympics. Great Britain played against France in the only match. John Symes helped his team win the gold medal. In the first part of the match, he scored 15 runs. In the second part, he scored one run. His team's victory made them Olympic champions in cricket!
