Starting in City Government
Before becoming mayor, John Thomaides was part of the San Marcos city council. The city council is a group of elected people who make decisions for the city. He served on the council from 2003 to 2010.
In 2010, he ran for mayor but did not win. He lost to Daniel Guerrero by a very small number of votes. After that, Thomaides continued to serve on the city council. He was a council member again from 2011 to 2016.
Becoming Mayor
In 2016, John Thomaides decided to run for mayor once more. He ran against another local business owner, Ruben Becerra. After a special election in December 2016, Thomaides won. He won by 42 votes, which was the same number of votes he had lost by in 2010.
Working for the Environment
During his first year as mayor, John Thomaides joined an important group. This group is called the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda. It is a team of mayors from across the United States. They work together to fight climate change. By joining, Mayor Thomaides showed his commitment to protecting the environment in San Marcos. He was the sixth mayor in Texas to join this group.
