John Tiptoft, 1st Baron Tiptoft (died 27 January 1443) was an important English nobleman. He held many key jobs for the King. He was a Knight of the Shire (a representative for a county) for Huntingdonshire and Somerset. He also served as the Speaker of the House of Commons. This meant he led the meetings in Parliament. John Tiptoft was also the Treasurer of the Household, the Chief Butler of England, and the Treasurer of the Exchequer. He was also a governor (Seneschal) in parts of France like Landes and Aquitaine.

Early Life and Family

John Tiptoft was the oldest son of Sir Pain Tiptoft. His mother was Agnes Wrothe. He was born into a noble family. He owned large estates (manors) in places like Burwell and Eversden in Cambridgeshire. Later, he inherited more lands from his cousin, Elizabeth Wrothe. These included manors in Nether Wallop, Hampshire, Worcesters in Enfield, and Redlynch. It is also interesting to know that John Tiptoft was a descendant of the famous Charlemagne.

A Career in Royal Service

John Tiptoft's career grew quickly because of his good connections. His father worked for an important nobleman, Richard, Earl of Arundel. John himself joined the household of Henry of Bolingbroke. This was before Henry became King Henry IV. John served in Henry's royal court.

When Henry Bolingbroke became king, John Tiptoft was one of 46 esquires (young noblemen) knighted by him. This happened just before Henry's coronation. As a "King's knight," he was given a good income for life. This showed how much the King trusted him.

Roles in Parliament

John Tiptoft became a knight of the shire for Huntingdonshire several times. He represented the area in Parliament in 1404 and again in 1406. In 1406, he was chosen to be the Speaker of the House of Commons. This was a very important role. He also represented Somerset in Parliament in 1414.

Other Important Positions

John Tiptoft held many other high-ranking jobs for the King:

  • Treasurer of the Household (1406–1408): He managed the money for the royal family.
  • Chief Butler of England (1407): He was in charge of the King's wine supply and related taxes.
  • Treasurer of the Exchequer (1408–1409): He managed the country's money.
  • Seneschal of Aquitaine (1415–1423): He was a high-ranking official or governor in the region of Aquitaine in France.
  • Councillor of Regency to Henry VI (1422–1443): He was an advisor to the young King Henry VI. A "Regency" means a time when a king is too young to rule, so others rule for him.
  • Lord Steward of the Household (1426–1432): He was a senior officer in the royal household.

On January 7, 1426, John Tiptoft was given the title of Baron Tiptoft. This meant he became a lord and could attend the House of Lords.

John Tiptoft was married two times. He had children only with his second wife.

  • His first wife was Philippa Talbot. They married before 1408, but they did not have any children.
  • His second wife was Joyce Charleton. They married in 1422. Joyce was the younger daughter of Edward Charleton, 5th Baron Cherleton. Together, John and Joyce had four children:
