Sir John Trevor I (born 1563, died 1630) was an important Welsh politician. He was known for his work in the English government and navy during the time of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.

Early Life and Family Connections

John Trevor was born in 1563 in Mortlake, Surrey. He was the second son of John Trevor from Trevalyn Hall in Wales. His family had good connections and became quite wealthy.

His father worked for Sir Richard Sackville, a powerful person at the time. John Trevor followed in his father's footsteps. He also worked for Sir Richard's son, Sir Thomas Sackville, who later became the Earl of Dorset.

Through these connections, John Trevor became a secretary to Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham. His brothers, Richard and Sackville, also worked there. In 1592, John Trevor married Margaret Trevanion. Her family also had important connections, including a cousin of Elizabeth I.

A Career in Parliament

Thanks to his family and marriage connections, John Trevor became a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he was chosen to represent different areas in the British House of Commons. He served as an MP for several places:

  • Reigate in 1593 and 1601
  • Bletchingley in 1597, 1604, and 1614
  • Bodmin in 1621
  • East Looe in 1625

Being an MP allowed him to help make laws and represent the people of these towns.

Leading the Royal Navy

John Trevor's most important job was as the Surveyor and Rigger of the Navy. He started this role in 1598. In this position, he was in charge of building, repairing, and maintaining the ships for the Royal Navy.

Even though his official salary was not very high, this job offered many chances to earn more money. This likely became his main source of income until he left the role in 1611.

Royal Recognition and Honors

John Trevor was highly respected by the royal court. This was clear from the many honors and jobs he received. In 1603 alone, he was knighted by King James I at the Tower of London. Being knighted meant he was given the title "Sir."

He also received several other important appointments:

  • He became the Steward and Receiver at Windsor Castle.
  • He was appointed Keeper of Upnor Castle.
  • He became Keeper of the royal house and park of Oatlands. John Trevor lived at Oatlands for much of his life.

He also served as a Gentleman Usher of the Privy Chamber by 1603 and later as a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber from 1625. These roles meant he was a close attendant to the King.

Family Legacy

Sir John Trevor I had a lasting impact. His son, Sir John Trevor II, and his grandson, Sir John Trevor III, both followed in his footsteps and became Members of Parliament.
