John Robert William Vesey, 4th Viscount de Vesci (born May 21, 1844 – died July 6, 1903), was an important nobleman from Ireland who also served as an officer in the British Army. He was sometimes known as "Yvo."

Life Story

John Vesey was the oldest son of the 3rd Viscount de Vesci. His mother was Lady Emma Herbert. In 1863, he joined the Coldstream Guards, a famous regiment in the British Army. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a captain in 1866 and a lieutenant colonel in 1876.

In 1875, when his father passed away, John Vesey inherited his father's titles, becoming the 4th Viscount de Vesci. These titles were part of the Peerage of Ireland, which meant they were Irish noble titles. He left the army in 1883.

A year later, in 1884, he received a new title: Baron de Vesci. This new title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This was important because it gave him a special, permanent seat in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament. From 1883 to 1900, he also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Queen's County (now known as County Laois). This role meant he was the King or Queen's official representative in that county.

Family Life

On June 4, 1872, John Vesey married Lady Evelyn Charteris. She was the eldest daughter of the 10th Earl of Wemyss. They had one daughter together:

  • Hon. Mary Gertrude Vesey (born April 10, 1889 – died November 28, 1970). She later married Hon. Aubrey Herbert.

Passing Away and Titles

John Vesey passed away in 1903. Because he did not have any sons, his British title, Baron de Vesci, became extinct (meaning it ended). However, his Irish titles were passed on to his nephew, Yvo Vesey, 5th Viscount de Vesci.
