John William O'Malley (June 11, 1927 – September 11, 2022) was a well-known American professor, historian, and a Jesuit priest. Jesuits are a group of Catholic priests and brothers. He taught at Georgetown University and was an expert on the history of religion in Europe, especially during the early modern period. John O'Malley was born in 1927 in a town called Tiltonsville, Ohio. When he was 18, he decided to join the Society of Jesus, becoming a Jesuit. He later went to Harvard University and earned a special degree called a PhD in history. This means he became an expert in studying the past.
His Final Years
John O'Malley lived to be 95 years old. He passed away on September 11, 2022. He is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery at Georgetown University, where he taught for many years.

John O'Malley taught at several universities during his life. He was a professor at the University of Detroit starting in 1965. Later, he taught at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Massachusetts. Finally, he became a professor at Georgetown University, which is a very famous school.

O'Malley wrote many books that are still important today. One of his most famous books is The First Jesuits, published in 1993. This book was so popular that it was translated into 12 different languages! He also wrote What Happened at Vatican II in 2008, which explains a big meeting in the Catholic Church. Another important book was The Jesuits. A History from Ignatius to the Present, which tells the story of the Jesuits from the very beginning.

John O'Malley received many awards for his work in history and religion. Harvard University, where he studied, gave him a special medal called the Graduate School of Arts Centennial Medal. He was also chosen to lead important groups, like the Renaissance Society of America and the American Catholic Historical Association.
Joining Important Societies
Because of his amazing work, O'Malley was invited to join several very important academic groups. In 1995, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1997, he joined the American Philosophical Society. He also received the Johannes Quasten Medal from the Catholic University of America. In 2014, he won the John Gilmary Shea Prize for his book about the Council of Trent. These awards show how much his work was respected by other historians and scholars.
