John W. de Gruchy (born March 18, 1939) is a Christian theologian from South Africa. He is well-known for his important work against apartheid, which was a system of unfair racial separation. He is currently a professor who has retired but still teaches at the University of Cape Town. He also holds a special teaching position at the University of Stellenbosch.

Early Life and Education

John W. de Gruchy was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He studied at several universities, including the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University in South Africa. He also studied in the United States at the Chicago Theological Seminary and the University of Chicago.

He earned two doctorates, which are very high academic degrees. One was in theology, which is the study of religious beliefs. The other was in the social sciences, which looks at how people live in groups. He has also received several special honorary doctorates.

Fighting Apartheid

For many years, Professor de Gruchy taught Christian Studies at the University of Cape Town. Some of his earliest writings were created during the time of apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid was a set of laws that separated people based on their race and treated non-white people unfairly.

Professor de Gruchy bravely spoke out against these unfair laws. He used ideas from another theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, to argue that people who were being treated unfairly should be set free. His work helped to challenge the apartheid system.

Later Work and Reconciliation

After the apartheid laws were removed in 1991, Professor de Gruchy continued his important work. He wrote about how art can play a role in society from a religious point of view. He also strongly supported a "theology of reconciliation." This idea focuses on bringing people together and healing divisions after times of conflict.

He is still an emeritus professor at the University of Cape Town. This means he has retired but keeps his title and connections to the university. He also has a special role as an extraordinary professor at the University of Stellenbosch. In 2002, a special book was published in his honor.
