Sir John Walter: A Life in Law
Early Life and Learning
John Walter went to Brasenose College, Oxford for his education. After that, he studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple in London. He became a lawyer in 1590. Later, in 1605, he became a "bencher," which was a senior position at the Inner Temple, showing he was a respected lawyer.
Working as a Lawyer and Judge
Sir John Walter worked in important courts like the Exchequer and Chancery. These courts handled money matters and fairness in legal disputes. He also became a lawyer for the University of Oxford.
In 1613, he was chosen to be the attorney general and a trustee for the Prince of Wales. This was a very important job, helping the future king with legal matters. He also bought some land, including the manor of Wolvercote in 1616.
Becoming a Knight and Member of Parliament
John Walter was knighted in 1619, which meant he was given the title "Sir." In 1621, he was elected to Parliament, representing a place called East Looe. This meant he helped make decisions for the country.
In 1625, he was given an even higher position: Chief Baron of the Exchequer court. This made him a very powerful judge.
Later Years and Challenges
Sir John Walter sometimes disagreed with King Charles I on legal matters, especially about the law of treason. Because of these disagreements, in 1630, he was told he could no longer serve as a judge.
